Essential Spring Striper Lures

As the bitter winds of March begin to transition to the milder temps of April, striper fisherman all over Cape Cod will be readying their rods and tackle bags for the first striper trip of the year. There are three select lures that every serious fisherman has in their arsenal to cover all the bases. We asked the Goose Pro Staffers what they make sure is in their tackle bag when they head out for those first few trips:

RON Z-Hands down, our best selling lure in the store....and for good reason.  The size, action and profile mimic nearly every small bait that early season stripers like to feed on.If the area you like to start the season in has predominantly small baits like eels, sand eels, spearing, etc, this is a very effective choice.

In the very beginning of the season, it can pay to down size this one to the 4 inch. As the season progresses, moving up to the 6 might be a better idea depending on where you usually like to fish. Color? White is the most popular, but green and hot pink have their adherents. You should have a bag in each of those colors and sizes to cover any eventuality in your tackle bag.

Daiwa Salt Pro Minnow- if the bait tends to be on the larger side where you fish( herring, etc), this lure is a good "match the hatch" selection. Particularly on the bayside, the green mack color( pictured above) can be a cold blooded striper slayer. Bone and sand eel colors are most popular for early season on the Nantucket Sound Side.

Drifter Doc- This lure has exceptional triggering capabilities resulting from its mesmerizing side-to-side action. Againif the bait tends to be on the larger side where you fish( herring, squid, etc), this lure is a good "match the hatch" surface selection. Bone color is the way to go.

Of course, there are dozens of variants of these 3 lures, produced by various manufacturers, that are all super effective in their own right. We should know...the Goose stocks most of them because they work!. This list is simply intended as a starting point, If you have different ideas about more effective lures for the body of water you like to start the striper season in, drop in on the
