Early reports are mixed...the trout haven't yet acclimated to their new environs and are feeding on their old hatchery schedules. The bites are sporadic, but epic when they happen. Be patient and wait for them to turn on.
What's catching them? Most of the reports coming into the shop suggest the usual, post stocking favorite: Berkley Power Bait. However, we did speak with one gentleman that hammered them on a size 8 black Wooly Bugger in a freshly stocked Brewster pond. Another reported good catches on 1/8 oz Gold blade Rooster tail. Best tactic for the first week after stocking? Soak some power bait/ nightcrawlers/ meal worms on one rod, then search cast with an 1/8 oz gold or silver spoon or spinner on another....depending on their mood, they will show a decided preference for one or the other.
On the saltwater front, our New York and New Jersey customers are reporting that the stripers are just starting to kick there the past few days. Mostly schoolies, but occasional fish into the 30 inch class. Historically, the Cape is about a month or so behind, so, barring a really bad turn in the weather, we should be seeing some of those fish in weeks now.
Some of our hardiest customers have reported catching some small holdover stripers in Barnstable and Chatham..this is hard, unreliable fishing though until water and air temps settle into upper 40's low 50's.

Ice Fishing Time 2/ 3/25
There is some fishable ice on the shallower ponds and fisherman are taking advantage. We have received some great reports of decent trout and bass caught through the ice this past week.
Please check with local FD &PD before venturing out onto your favorite pond...falling through is serious business. BE SAFE!

Trout Stocking is near 2/1/25
Though it's frightfully cold today and hard to imagine, the annual spring trout stocking is actually only a month or so away. Unless we get a late winter freeze, the state typically begins stocking mid to late March.
So, bring your reels in now for a fresh respool of line and stock up on your favorite colors and sizes of spoons and spinners. Don't wait until the lines are a mile long on the first nice fishing day!
