For spring 2025, we have arranged for a number of Goose Endorsed Charter captains to submit daily reports to the Goose Hummock Fishing Report page.
Today's Report:
At this early stage of the fishing season ,it can be hard to find enough to talk about with most bodies of water just beginning to warm up. There is only so much you can say about stocked trout fishing, right?( we actually do have a bit to say about that ..stay tuned).
What we can talk about are the many signs of spring relevant to fishing that are starting to happen the last week of March / first week of April. Every one of the signs is a signal that we are getting much closer to things busting wide open...and all the first signs of spring every fisherman look for have begun to appear this week-from Capt Scott Yelle, Ortus Charters, spotting of Right Whales off PTown, to Ian seeing birds working on herring on the Soundside, to Wingman spying some Ospreys starting to return , all the critical first steps started to fall into place over the last week.
The fishing: The trout and freshwater bass fishing is starting to get good.. in the afternoons. At this early stage of the freshwater fishing season, it is often best to skip the early mornings and focus your attention in mid day and afternoons. Most of the reports coming into the shop are of decent catches from noon to dusk. It just makes sense, right? Night times are still fairly frigid and in early am ,water temps will drop low enough to limit fish activity.
What's working? All the usual suspects: Berkley Power Bait, Rooster Tail spinners, Thomas spoons. Because most of the reports we are getting are from guys fishing in the afternoon, gold & gold variant colorations seem to be working best.
Prespawn activity for largemouth and smallmouth has begun and we are starting to get some pics sent in of decent fish over the past few days. What's working? Shiners spinnerbaits, suspending jerk baits and rubber baits fished very slowly. If you are going to try some bass fishing this weekend, fish slow.
On the saltwater front: it's any day now before the herring start coming into the rivers in meaningful numbers. As mentioned above, some of the guys in the shop have seen osprey/ bird activity that appeared to be working a small school of herring.
Stripers: Facebook was kind enough to remind me that on April 3rd, 2014, we weighed in a 40 inch striper at the Goose caught by a guy named Dave. Long time Goose customers will probably remember that pic taking up alot of real estate on our website at that time.
Can you catch stripers now? Yes. Will it be hard and few and far between? Yes. Everyone knows at this point that there are year round , winter over populations of stripers that can be fished for much earlier than the migrating fish that show up in early May.
If you want to try, the salt water rivers on both sides, Barnstable Harbor and upper reaches of Pleasant Bay.
